  10. My boys favorite game continues to be Dark Designs III (I & II, also).  Unfortunately, we encountered an error ($46) when we tried to unlock the doors with the Ebonstone.  The program could not recover.  Is there a fix for this?

  18. There was a problem with the Ebonstone in Dark Designs III.  We have fixed the problem and the news disks are ready to be mailed.  Just call our customer support at 1-800-831-2694 to ask for a replacement.

  20. In the meantime, never use the ebonstone unless you are at a square that says "There is shimmering interdimensional gate here."

  36. No, it may be deceiving, but you can't go through those doors.  If you have played Dark Designs II, you will recognize those doors as the ones where the armies of Agamol came through.  There are no keys, they cannot be opened.

I love the templates, but I have a problem getting the permanent messages erased.  I know you addressed this problem in G-S #11.  It sounds like I should be in the paint module, but when I open up AWGS and select my template folder, it goes right to page layout.  I can't figure out how to apply your solutions.  I know I must be doing something wrong, but for the life of me, I can't figure it out!  Can you help?

  52. When you go into AWGS, click on the paint module icon instead of the name of the template.  That will take you into the paint module of the program.  From there, you may load the template directly or import something -- like a Spencer's Page.

I am running an Apple IIgs with an Okidata 92 printer.  The system works well with AppleWorks, Print Shop, and Citibank banking.  My problem is that I cannot print anything from Softdisk.  When I try, all that happens is that the printer will freeze up.  I have the Superwriter 924 printer interface with the 8-pin mini DIN cable in the printer port.  Slot 1 is set for printer.  Am I doing something wrong?  Is it possible to print, at least, the text of the articles to the printer.  Can you help?

If you are printing from Softdisk G-S or any other GS-specific program, you need what is called a "driver."  A driver is a bunch of routines that translate the data your program generates into a format your printer can understand.  When you use AppleWorks or Print Shop and choose a printer, that's sort of like choosing what driver to use.  However, the only GS-specific drivers available are for the ImageWriter II, Epson, LaserWriter, and Hewlett-Packard printers.  If your printer has an Epson-emulation mode (as many do), you can set that.  You'll need to install the Epson driver from the System Tools disk (by running the Installer on that disk).  Reboot, then choose the Control Panel from the Apple menu, choose DC Printer (direct connect printer), and then choose "Epson."  If your printer doesn't have an Epson emulation mode, you'll only be able to use 8-bit programs (like AppleWorks and Print Shop).

Due to our shell changes and the new System 5.0.4, you may experience more disk swapping for some applications -- including Softdisk.  One thing that should be faster though is the articles' access time.  Once you have gone to an article, it is "cached."  This means that the article is kept in memory until it is bumped by another one.  The cache may hold all the articles or half of them or only one -- depending on your onboard memory capacity.

I have a IIgs with 3.5" and 5.25" drives and a printer.  In memory expansion there is a GS-RAM Ultra with 1.5 meg on board.  One thing that I've been thinking about is the EPROM locations on the Ultra board.  I have not seen any of the "future applications" that Applied Engineering had in their advertising.  Are there any applications available now or soon to be released?  What are some possible uses for these chips?

  110. Recently, I installed the ZipChip GSX 1600 accelerator in slot 4 and I also added  the Conserver from AE.  The accelerated speed is fabulous (I can't wait for the upgrade) as I use AppleWorks GS often for business and personal tasks.

Some of my AWGS files are fairly large (300K+) and when they are printed it consumes a lot of time.  One file, before accelerator, took around 3 hours to print; now, after the Zip, the same file still takes about 50 minutes.  The file cannot be broken up (the data must be printed all together); it is printed in the data base list mode, 50% reduced, standard vertical height, Geneva 12 point font, no lines, printed sideways.  I noticed in my ImageWriter II manual that Apple offers a 32K buffer (not much help).  What type of methods or products are out there that would provide quicker printing (without having to buy new interface, like AE Parallel Pro)?  After installing a large buffer, would the printer operate without all of the nasty pauses when printing in the Better Text or Color mode?

I noticed, when I got my AE Conserver, the response time rating of the surge protection is a maximum 5 nanoseconds.  I had read and been told that a response time of less than 1 nanosecond is most desirable for the protection of any equipment.  I was disappointed in that aspect of the product.  To remedy the situation I have installed surge protection with quicker response time in front of the Conserver.

I have been hesitating to purchase a modem because the main task I would need it for is to send/receive fax.  I'm not interested in a regular fax machine when the computer should do better (good quality, less expense, no desk clutter) job than a standard fax machine.  I have seen send/receive fax modems for Macs and PCs.  The only product I've noticed for Apple IIs is the AE modem with send only capability.  Is this soon to be upgraded to send and receive; or, is there some technical reason for not being able to receive fax?

Has anyone done a professional review of the ZipChip GS series of accelerators?  I'm interested in the limitations and/or advantages compared to the AE Transwarp accelerator and the associated software.  I'd like to know the best use/ configuration (or pitfalls) of the hardware and software (if there is anything to add to the documentation) of the ZipChip GS.
